Triveni Group’s Ghorahi Cement headed by Parushottam Lal Shanghai is yet to pay Rs 1 billion in electricity bills, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

Ram Chandra Shanghai, the promotor of Ghorahi Cement, a company under the Triveni Group, is currently the Associate Vice President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Triveni Spinning Mills, another large-scale factory operated by the Shangai’s Triveni Group, is also yet to pay Rs 650 million to NEA.

Ram Chandra Shanghai has been trying to evade a total of Rs 1.65 billion outstanding for both these companies. Ghorahi Cement’s chairman Purushottam Lal Shanghai, Ram Chandra’s eldest brother, allegedly decided not to pay the Rs 1 billion following advice from his brother Ram Chandra.

After Sahil Agrawal's Jagdamba Steels, Triveni Group has the most arrears outstanding with the NEA. However, after gaining power by becoming the vice president of FNCCI, Ram Chandra is using his reach to avoid clearing the arrears.

Earlier, Ghorahi Cement was also found to have stolen limestone from a mine owned by Rolpa Cement Industry. It was later revealed that Ghorahi—which had been producing and selling cement under the names Sagarmatha and Sagarmatha Gold—had taken 9,000 tipper loads of limestone from the said quarry. Shanghai had registered a mine called Rolpa Limestone Industry to excavate limestone from Rolpa Cement’s mine.
