Australia faces “cascading” climate threats as extreme heat, floods, droughts and storms increasingly strike at the same time, a government report has warned.
The first National Climate Risk Assessment said no community will be spared, with northern regions, remote towns and outer suburbs most at risk. The report highlighted pressure on health, infrastructure and industries as overlapping disasters intensify, according to Reuters.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen said some impacts are now unavoidable but stronger action toward net-zero emissions by 2050 can still limit damage. The government also launched a national adaptation plan to coordinate responses across federal, state and local levels, with a 2035 emissions target to be announced soon.
Since 2022, Canberra has committed A$3.6bn to adaptation measures, alongside a goal of cutting emissions 43 percent by 2030 and reaching net-zero mid-century, Reuters reported.
