Arghakhanchi builds ponds to fight fire

The small water ponds are being constructed in Arghakhanchi Salla forest to control and prevent the forest from fire. Nine ponds have been constructed in various places across the district in collaboration with the Division Forest Office, Arghakhanchi and local community forest user groups.

Similarly, three ponds have been constructed in Sandhikharka Municipality, four in Bhumikasthan Municipality and two in Panini Rural Municipality, according to Keshav Khadka, Information Officer of the Division Forest Office, Arghakhanchi.

Local community forest groups are planning to build more ponds in different municipalities. The Division Forest Office informed further plans to build such structures in following days with technical support and active participation of the society.

Resource management has also been done to ensure that water remains in all the ponds constructed for a long time, which will make them usable even in dry weather.

Apart from fire control, such ponds will also act as a water source for wildlife. In addition, these structures will be useful for conserving biodiversity, maintaining environmental balance, and increasing water availability at the local level.

The Division Forest Office, Arghakhanchi, is prioritizing awareness programs for public ensuring not to light fires in forest areas, not to throw cigarettes or fire-retardant materials indiscriminately, and to immediately inform the concerned agency if a fire is seen, said Keshav Khadka, Information Officer of the Division Forest Office.
