Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) whip Prakash Chandra Pariyar said that attempting to obstruct any media organizations is an attack on press freedom. In Monday’s meeting at the House of Representatives, Pariyar asked the government to take the full protection of the press freedom given by the Constitution of Nepal.

He added that he was not addressing the problem as a lawmaker or the mass communication student but as an advocate of press freedom and condemned an incident of the vehicles being parked in front of the leading media organizations disrupting access to and from its premises.

Pariyar said that the actions can only be done by those who fear truth and are trying to block the sun with the palm of one’s hand.

Recalling Nepal’s authoritarian past, during King Gyanendra Shah’s military evasion in the newsroom, Nepali media didn’t let them intimidate them. And how they thought that this act would be frightening today?’

Pariyar said the RSP stands firmly in support of democracy, the rule of law, and full press freedom. He stressed that no government, political force, or vested interest should be allowed to exert pressure on, intimidate, or create disorder for the media.

He emphasized that safeguarding press freedom is essential to protecting democracy and pledged that his party would continue to stand at the forefront of that cause.
