Two more arrested in fake rescue scam
Nepal Police arrested two more people for their alleged involvement in conducting a fake rescue operation in the mountaineering sector.
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police apprehended Rajendra Bahadur Singh (56), former Vice-President of the Air Service Operators Association and Sandeep Tiwari (28), a representative of the Royal Holidays Adventure and Travel Company at Thamel.
Singh, a resident of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City-31, was taken into custody today while Tiwari, a resident of Jwalamukhi Rural Municipality-2 in Dhading district, was detained last Tuesday.
Shiva Kumar Shrestha, Spokesperson at the CIB, said that altogether nine people have been arrested so far in connection with this scam.
Those arrested are affiliated with trekking companies, rescue companies, hospitals, Nepal-based staff of foreign insurance companies and shareholder-operators of helicopter companies, said Spokesperson Shrestha.
The Bureau reported that the investigation found the accused falsely claiming to have rescued foreign tourists who supposedly fell ill during high-altitude treks, using these fake incidents to fraudulently secure insurance payouts and make unlawful financial gains.
Tiger census in Shuklaphanta National Park from March 7
Tiger count is beginning in the Shuklaphanta National Park (SNP) from March 7.
Information officer at SNP, Purushottam Wagle, informed that the tigers would be counted in the park and vicinity immediately after the House of Representatives elections. The tiger census was scheduled after the elections, considering the workforce management.
Automated cameras would be fixed at Jogbudha of Dadeldhura and Laljhadi-Mohana Reserve Area in addition to SNP for counting the big cats. The cameras would be installed in the tiger's territory. The territory has been named Shuklaphanta-Laljhandi-Jogbuda Complex for the tiger count.
Earlier in 2022, the complex had recorded 36 adult tigers. Among which, 16 were female and 12 male. Eight others were added in the census with further analyses.
Although SNP is a small sanctuary for the tigers, there are dense species of prey, contributing to the rise in the number of tigers, the conservationists said. SNP, a home to endangered species of wildlife, stretches in 305 square kilometers.

American rapper and producer Snoop Dogg received a guard of honour and was greeted with twirling white towels on Tuesday on his first visit to Swansea City since becoming an investor with the Welsh side last year, Reuters reported.
Dressed in Swansea's colours, the 54-year-old took the field ahead of the Championship game against Preston North End through a guard of honour comprising young footballers from Wales, as over 20,000 fans filled the stands.
The match ended 1-1, with Swansea's Liam Cullen netting a 95th-minute equaliser, according to Reuters.
Newcastle through to last 16 of Champions League 9-3 on aggregate
Newcastle United took their place in the last 16 knockout stage of the Champions League after beating Qarabag 3-2 at St. James' Park on Tuesday for a 9-3 on aggregate win, Reuters reported.
The outcome was never in doubt after Newcastle thrashed Qarabag 6-1 in the first leg of the playoff in Baku last week but expectations of a second goal rush proved short-lived after a promising start.

Matches postponed amid Guadalajara violence, FIFA monitoring World Cup host city
Four soccer games in Mexico were postponed after violence flared near Guadalajara in the wake of a military operation that left cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera dead, with FIFA monitoring the situation in the host city for the 2026 World Cup, Reuters reported.
Oseguera, known as "El Mencho" and mastermind of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), died in custody after being injured in a special forces operation on Mexico's Pacific coast in Jalisco state, according to the defense ministry.
"At FIFA Mexico, we are closely monitoring the situation in Jalisco and remain in constant communication with the authorities," a FIFA spokesperson told Reuters.
