PM Karki reaffirms Nepal's unflinching commitment to advancing human rights

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has reaffirmed Nepal's unflinching commitment to advancing human rights through policy, legal and institutional measures. 

She highlighted the provisions of the Constitution of Nepal and expressed her commitment to protecting and promoting all human rights and fundamental freedoms, the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in Geneva said in a press statement.  

In her addresses to the High-Level Segment of the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva today through a video statement, the Prime Minister expressed Nepal's commitment to the principles of UN Charter and reiterated the resolve of the Government of Nepal to conclude the transitional justice process in a transparent, inclusive, credible, and victim-centric approach.

The Prime Minister, while recalling the September 2025 Gen-Z movement in Nepal, stated that the mandate of the current Government is to ensure accountability, combat corruption, and deliver good governance. 

She highlighted the preparations being made for holding the elections to the House of Representatives on March 5 in a free and fair manner. 

Presidents, Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and dignitaries from over 120 countries are going to address the opening plenary of the High-Level segment. 

The President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, and Swiss Federal Vice President and Head of Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis addressed the session, which was formally convened by the President of the Human Rights Council Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro.

Nepali delegation, led by Prime Minister Karki, comprises Ram Prasad Subedi, Permanent Representative, and senior officials from the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva.

The ongoing 61st session of the Human Rights Council is scheduled to conclude on March 31, 2026 in Geneva.

Gold price increases by Rs 1, 300 per tola on Tuesday

The price of gold has increased by Rs 1,300 per tola (11.66 grams) in the domestic market today as compared to Monday. However, the price of silver has declined by Rs 10 per tola.

According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association, gold is being traded at Rs 314,800 per tola today against Rs 313,500 per tola on Monday.

Similarly, the Federation has fixed the price of silver at Rs 5,885 per tola today. It was traded at Rs 5,595 per tola on Monday. 

As per the international media, gold is being traded at USD 5,078 per ounce and silver at USD 90 per ounce in the international market today.

Govt declares wild boar as agriculturally harmful animals

The government of Nepal has once again declared wild boars as agriculturally harmful animals.

Issuing a notice on Monday, the Ministry of Forest and Environment stated that if wild boars are seen harming and damaging the field, anyone can chase and kill it without permission of the authorities with some conditions.

It doesn’t include small breed boars. However, it is prohibited to kill, catch or chase such animals by entering parks or reserves and forest areas. 

If the boar is caught, it will be handed over to the relevant authority–relevant national park, hunting reserve, wildlife reserve or forest office. And if the boar dies, it will be buried in the presence of ward representatives and some locals with some amount to be deposited in the revenue account according to its weight and will be used within a ward (except for commercial purposes), reads the notice. 

NC provides Rs 500,000 to Samba

The Nepali Congress (NC) has contributed Rs 500,000 to support the medical treatment of Sabitra Bhandari, captain of Nepal’s national women’s football team, aka Samba. 

The amount has deposited into the account of All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), reads a statement issued by the party on Tuesday. 

Taking to Facebook on Monday, Bhandari, all-time leading goal scorer of Nepal, wrote an emotional post asking for financial support for her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery. 

Acting Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Dulal confirmed that the NC has already deposited the amount in the designated bank account for the surgery. 

​​​​​​​She has suffered a serious injury to the MCL and graft of her right knee in the second half of Wellington Phoenix's Round 11 match against Brisbane Roar on January 3. 

App All 7 On Board Air Ambulance Flying To Delhi Die In Crash In Jharkhand

All seven people on board an air ambulance were killed when the aircraft crashed near Simaria in Jharkhand's Chatra district on Monday evening. The flight was en route from Ranchi to Delhi when the accident occurred, a top state government official said, NDTV reported. 

"All seven on board the air ambulance were killed in the crash. The plane was on the way to Delhi from Ranchi," Chatra Deputy Commissioner Keerthishree G told news agency PTI.

The aircraft, operated by Redbird Airways Pvt Ltd, took off from Ranchi airport at 7:11 pm. According to Chatra Deputy Commissioner Keerthishree G, the plane went missing around 7:30 pm and later crashed in the Bariatu Panchayat area of Simaria, a densely forested region, according to NDTV. 

Hetmyer hammers 85 as West Indies thrash Zimbabwe

Shimron Hetmyer made a stunning 85 off 34 balls as West Indies began their T20 World Cup Super 8 stage with an emphatic 107-run victory over Zimbabwe, BBC reported. 

Hetmyer hit seven sixes and seven fours as he mixed finesse with power - at a strike rate of 250 - to help West Indies post a mammoth 254-6.

The left-handed Guyanese was dropped twice by Tashinga Musekiwa - on nine and 70 - before he was eventually caught at deep mid-wicket by Brian Bennett off experienced spinner Graeme Cremer, according to BBC. 

Tudor sees harsh reality of Tottenham's plight

If Igor Tudor needed hard evidence as to the size of his task at Tottenham Hotspur he got a filing cabinet's worth in Sunday's 4-1 home defeat by Arsenal in the north London derby, Reuters reported. 

There had been a slight lift in the mood amongst Tottenham fans ahead of the game, a feeling that Tudor might be able to initiate a "new manager bounce" against an Arsenal side showing signs of nerves in the Premier League title race.

Instead, a dominant Arsenal strolled to three points with their biggest league win at their arch-rivals since 1978, according to Reuters. 

Benfica’s Prestianni gets provisional one-match ban for Vinicius incident

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) says it has provisionally suspended Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni for one match after accusations he racially abused Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr, Aljazeera reported. 

The decision, announced on Monday, means that Prestianni will miss Wednesday’s second leg of the Champions League playoff between Real and Benfica at the Bernabeu. Madrid won the first match in Lisbon on Tuesday with Vinicius scoring a second-half winner for a 1-0 victory.

The game was halted for nearly 10 minutes after the Brazil forward scored and celebrated by the Benfica corner flag, upsetting local fans and players. After being confronted by Prestianni, Vinicius accused the Argentinian player of calling him “monkey”.
