Mexican military kills cartel boss 'El Mencho' in US-backed raid

One of Mexico's most notorious drug lords, Nemesio Oseguera, or "El Mencho," was killed in a military raid on Sunday, sparking widespread retaliatory violence, Reuters reported. 

President Claudia Sheinbaum has been under mounting pressure from Washington to intensify her offensive against drug cartels blamed for producing and smuggling drugs, particularly the synthetic opioid fentanyl, across the border to the U.S.

Oseguera, 60, the mastermind of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) died in custody after being injured in a military operation by Mexican special forces in the town of Tapalpa on Mexico's Pacific coast in Jalisco state, according to Mexico's defense ministry, according to Reuters. 

 

Powerful winter storm slams US northeast as NYC issues travel ban

A historic winter storm has started lashing the northeast US, placing 59 million people under weather warnings and causing power outages and a travel ban in New York City, BBC reported. 

States of emergency have been declared in multiple US states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Rhode Island. Several have instituted restrictions or bans on travel due to the blizzard and thousands of flights have been cancelled.

Forecasters say much of the US northeast and the Canadian Maritimes will be impacted from Sunday evening to Monday, according to BBC. 

Armed man killed after entering secure perimeter of Trump's residence, Secret Service says

An armed man has been shot dead after entering the secure perimeter of US President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the Secret Service has said, BBC reported. 

The man was carrying a shotgun and fuel can when he was stopped and shot by Secret Service agents and a Sheriff's deputy, authorities said.

The incident happened around 01:30 ET (06:30 GMT) on Sunday morning, when the president was in Washington DC, according to BBC. 

Jacks of all trades helps England fight back to sink Sri Lanka at T20 World Cup

Will Jacks impressed with bat and ball to rescue England from a poor start and help them to a 51-run victory over Sri Lanka in a low-scoring Super Eight match at the Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday, Reuters reported. 

Tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka appeared to be well set after restricting England to a below-par 146-9 in the Group 2 match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Jacks, who made 21 useful runs down the order, returned to claim 3-22 as England bowled out Sri Lanka for 95 inside 17 overs to prevail, according to Reuters. 

South Africa thump India to assert T20 World Cup title credentials

South Africa bulldozed defending champions India by 76 runs on Sunday in their Super Eight Group One clash in the Twenty20 World Cup, underlining their title credentials and sending a strong signal to their rivals, Reuters reported. 

Choosing to bat in a rematch of the 2024 World Cup final, South Africa surged to a commanding 187‑7 following a remarkable recovery from a precarious 20-3.

In reply, tournament co-hosts India's timid top-order faltered swiftly, and their innings never quite escaped the grip of scoreboard pressure. They were bundled out for 111 in 18.5 overs, slipping to their first defeat of the World Cup, according to Reuters. 

Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu marks Great Martyr’s Day and International Mother Language Day

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu marked Great Martyr’s Day and International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2026 with due solemnity and fervor in Kathmandu, underscoring the enduring significance of linguistic rights and cultural diversity.

The two-day program held at the Embassy premises brought together members of the diplomats from different embassies and international organizations based in Kathmandu.

On the occasion, Embassy officials read out messages of the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh released on this august. Video messages from the President of UNESCO General Conference were also played in the event.

In his welcome remarks, Bangladesh Ambassador paid deep homage to the language martyrs for upholding the sanctity of Bangla in 1952. He highlighted the need for preserving and promoting mother language and underlined the necessity of multilingual mother-tongue based education as a basis of quality education system leading to overall development.

The Heads of Missions of Finland, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Russia and Deputy Representative of UNICEF delivered remarks in their mother tongue- Finnish, Singhali, Malay, Russian and Korean,  highlighting the leadership role of Bangladesh in celebrating the International Mother Language Day worldwide.

They recognized the importance of mother tongue-based multilingual education as the foundation for continued learning and development and the role of the young generation.

Two injured in Tarakeshwor leopard attack

Two persons were injured after being attacked by a leopard in Tarakeswar Municipality-9, Kathmandu. 

According to SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai of the District Police Range, Kathmandu, the injured have been identified as Dulal Maharjan and Mayanath Wagle.  Maharjan has been taken to Shubham  Hospital and Wagle to the Army Hospital for treatment. 

Maharjan sustained minor injuries to his head and left hand, while Wagle to his left hand.

Bhattarai said that locals have taken the leopard under control and it is currently locked inside the house. 

 

Election commission seeks three-day holiday for polls

The Election Commission recommended the government to grant three day holidays for the elections from Falgun 20-22. The commission confirmed that it was requested with the aim of increasing the enthusiastic participation of voters in the elections.
