Light rain and snow likely in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim today

The weather today will remain generally cloudy in the hilly and mountainous region and partly cloudy in the remaining places of the country. 

In addition, there is a possibility of light rain and snow at a few places in the hilly and mountainous region of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces, and at one or two places in the remaining hilly and mountainous region. Likewise, Fog and mist will occur at a few places over the Tarai region during the morning, according to the 8 am bulletin by the Weather Forecasting Division.

Tonight, generally cloudy conditions will prevail over the mountainous region of the country. Partly cloudy conditions will prevail over the Tarai region of Koshi and Bagmati Provinces and hilly region of Madhesh Province as well as the remaining hilly region, while the Tarai region of other provinces will remain mainly fair. There is a chance of light rain and snow at one or two isolated places over the high hilly and mountainous region of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki Provinces. Fog will occur at a few places over the Tarai region.

Meanwhile, meteorological analysis by the Division states that at present there is influence of the westerly low pressure system in Nepal.

 

PM Modi to address AI Summit today; French President, UN chief among key speakers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on Thursday, an event expected to bring together more than 500 leaders from the field of artificial intelligence, India Today reported. 

At the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister will address the gathering, which will also feature speeches by French President Emmanuel Macron and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

After attending the opening session at around 9.40 am, he will also visit the AI Impact Expo at the summit along with other leaders at about 11 am, where they will tour various country pavilions, the government said in a statement, according to India Today. 

Canada revises express entry immigration rules, adds military roles

Canada introduced new immigration priority categories on Wednesday to bring in skilled workers in fields ranging from research and health care to aviation, and to include certain military recruits, Reuters reported. 

The new categories align with Prime Minister Mark Carney's goals of broadly reducing the number of new permanent residents in Canada while recruiting skilled workers and scholars and boosting defense capabilities to lessen dependence on the United States.

The government said the shift was aimed at restoring immigration to sustainable levels while finding workers for key industries. Canada's government in recent years has sought to reduce the number of immigrants to ease strains on housing and social services, according to Reuters. 

US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere

The U.S. State Department is developing an online portal that will enable people in Europe and elsewhere to see content banned by their governments including alleged hate speech and terrorist propaganda, a move Washington views as a way to counter censorship, three sources familiar with the plan said, BBC reported. 

The site will be hosted at "freedom.gov," the sources said. One source said officials had discussed including a virtual private network function to make a user's traffic appear to originate in the U.S. and added that user activity on the site will not be tracked.

Headed by Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, the project was expected to be unveiled at last week's Munich Security Conference but was delayed, the sources said, according BBC. 

 

US to withdraw troops from Syria as tensions mount with Iran

The US is preparing to largely withdraw its remaining troops from Syria over the next few months, a senior White House official has told the BBC.

The official said the Syrian government has agreed to take the lead combatting terrorism within its borders and US military presence "at scale" is no longer required.

American troops have been in Syria since 2015, as part of an anti-terrorism campaign to counter the influence of the Islamic State (ISIS), according to BBC. 

Australia bans citizen trying to return from IS camp in Syria

Australia has barred a citizen linked to the Islamic State (IS) group from the country for up to two years, BBC reported. 

The person is among the group of 34 Australian women and children who tried to head home after being released from a Syrian camp earlier this week, only to be turned back by Syrian authorities for "technical reasons".

The ban was issued "on advice from security agencies", Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said on Wednesday, adding that the other 33 people do not meet "required legal thresholds" to be banned, according to BBC. 

 

 

Elections will be held in a fair and fearless environment: Home Minister Aryal

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has expressed confidence that the elections to the House of Representatives (HoR) set for March 5 will be held in a clean, fair and fearless environment. 

As part of the election preparations, he made an on-site inspection of various polling stations and the office of the election officer in Sundarijal area of Gokarneshwor Municipality, Constituency No-3, Kathmandu, today. 

During the inspection, Home Minister Aryal, also Spokesperson of the Government, directed the concerned officials to conduct the elections peacefully by being aware of the false information and propaganda that can come on social media.

The team, including the Home Secretary, the Chief District Officer of Kathmandu and the heads of security bodies, visited the polling stations in Gokarneshwor and Okhreni Secondary School and the Dhapdam area. 

On the occasion, the election officials informed that preparations including human resources, voter education and transportation of election materials are going on in full swing.

14 days left for HoR elections: ‘Temporary Voter List Procedure 2082’ issued

The Election Commission has introduced the ‘Temporary Voter List Procedure 2082’ to regularize the process of collecting temporary voter lists and permanent voting required for the elections to be held under the proportional electoral system under the House of Representatives.

The Commission has issued the procedure by exercising the authority granted by Section 44 of the Voter List Act, 2073. As per the procedure, the Commission will publish a notice including the program for collecting permanent voter lists. 

The names of employees working in the Government of Nepal, provincial governments, local levels, organizations owned or controlled by the government, army, police, detainees and prisoners in prisons, employees and security personnel deployed for election work, and heads and office bearers of constitutional bodies will be included in the permanent voter list.

According to the procedure issued by the Election Commission, if a person's name is missing or there is any error in the name or details of a voter, the concerned person may submit an application to the Chief Registration Officer with evidence to have their name included or the error corrected, the Commission has stated.
