Canada PM hails new partnership with China in wake of ‘new global realities’

Canada’s prime minister Mark Carney hailed a “new strategic partnership” with China as he held talks in Beijing with president Xi Jinpingon Friday, the first visit there by a Canadian leader in eight years, The Guardian reported. 

Addressing Xi in the Great Hall of the People, Carney said that “together we can build on the best of what this relationship has been in the past to create a new one adapted to new global realities”.

Engagement and cooperation would be “the foundation of our new strategic partnership”, he said. “Agriculture, energy, finance, that’s where we can make the most immediate progress.”

Returning Officers offices set up in Kaski for March 5 HoR elections

The Returning Officers offices are to be set up in Kaski for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections scheduled for March 5. 

Assistant Chief District Officer of Kaski Chitrangad Baral said that the offices of the returning officers will be established in Kaski district having three constituencies for the HoR elections today. 

The office for the Kaski Constituency-1 will be set up at the Animal Research and Training Center, Ramghat while for Constituency-2, it will be at the Federal Water Resources and Irrigation Management Office, Damsite; and for Constituency-3, it will be at the building of the Provincial Agriculture Ministry in Malepatan.

 

Gold price increases by Rs 700 per tola on Friday

The price of gold has increased by Rs 700 per tola in the domestic market on Friday. 

According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the precious yellow metal is being traded at Rs 277, 200 per tola today. It was traded at Rs 276, 500 per tola on Thursday. 

Similarly, the price of silver has increased by Rs 160 and is being traded at Rs 5, 645 per tola today.

National Earthquake Safety Day being observed today

The 27th National Earthquake Safety Day is being observed by organizing various programs. 

It has been observed since 2055 BS in commemoration of the great earthquake that occurred on Magh 2, 1990 BS (16 January 1934 AD). 

The purpose of observing this day is to raise awareness about earthquakes and increase preparedness. 

The earthquake on Baisakh 12, 2072 BS (25 April 2015) caused significant damages to life and property.

 

 

Trump threatens to invoke Insurrection Act to quell anti-ICE protests in Minnesota

US President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the rarely used Insurrection Act to quell unrest over federal immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis, BBC reported. 

He threatened to send in troops following a night of protests and vandalism in the Minnesota city after an agent shot a man in the leg.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said an officer opened fire after he was attacked by three Venezuelan nationals with a shovel and broom handle, according to BBC. 

Rabiot double lifts Milan after early scare at Como

AC Milan came from behind to earn a 3-1 victory at Como on Thursday, with Adrien Rabiot scoring twice to keep the away side in the Serie A title race, Reuters reported. 

Milan are second in the standings on 43 points, three behind rivals Inter Milan and three clear of Napoli in third, while Como are sixth with 34 points.

Como made the brighter start and took the lead after 10 minutes when Marc-Oliver Kempf rose to head home a corner, according to Reuters. 

Barcelona reach quarter-finals of Copa del Rey with 2-0 win

Second-half goals from Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal gave Barcelona a hard-fought 2-0 victory over second-tier leaders Racing Santander in the Copa del Rey on Thursday, sending them into the quarter-finals, Reuters reported. 

In a tightly contested match, the breakthrough came in the 66th minute when Torres timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and latched onto a through ball before rounding goalkeeper Jokin Ezkieta and finishing into an empty net.

Deep in stoppage time, after Racing's Manex Lozano missed a sitter from close range, Barcelona didn't waste the chance to put the game to bed with Yamal finishing a quick counter attack, according to Reuters. 

Trump accepts Nobel medal from Venezuelan opposition leader Machado

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado gave her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump on Thursday during a White House meeting, as she tries to gain some influence over how the president shapes the South American country's political future, Reuters reported. 

A White House official confirmed that Trump intends to keep the medal.

In a social media post on Thursday evening, Trump wrote: "Maria presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you Maria!"

Machado, who described the meeting as "excellent", said the gift was in recognition of what she called his commitment to the freedom of the Venezuelan people, according to Reuters.
