Four migrants die in US ICE custody over first 10 days of 2026

Four migrants died while in custody of US immigration authorities over the first 10 days of 2026, according to government press releases, a loss of life that followed record detention deaths in 2025 under President Donald Trump, Reuters reported. 

The incidents involved two migrants from Honduras, one from Cuba and another from Cambodia, and occurred from Jan 3 to 9, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The spate of in-custody deaths coincided with thefatal shooting of a Minnesota mother of three by an ICE officer, an incident that sparked protests in Minneapolis and cities around the country, according to Reuters. 

Trump to meet Venezuelan opposition leader Machado at the White House

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado will meet President Donald Trump on Thursday, the White House has confirmed, BBC reported. 

The visit comes just weeks after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was seized in Caracas by US forces. But Trump declined to endorse Machado, whose movement claimed victory in 2024's widely contested elections, as its new leader. 

The US instead backed Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's former vice-president, according to BBC. 

Minnesota sues Trump administration to block surge of ICE agents

The US state of Minnesota has sued the Trump administration in an attempt to block a surge of federal immigration agents into the state, BBC reported. 

The lawsuit argues the deployment amounts to an unconstitutional "federal invasion". Minnesota's Attorney General Keith Ellison said immigration operations had upended life for millions and caused "chaos and violence".

It comes after Renee Good, 37, was shot dead by an immigration agent in Minneapolis last week, triggering large protests in the city, according to BBC. 

Trump announces 25% tariff on countries doing business with Iran

US President Donald Trump on Monday said he had imposed a 25% tariff on goods from countries with commercial ties to Iran, a move that could put pressure on Tehran as anti-government protests enter a third week, BBC reported.

Trump said on social media that the tariff was "effective immediately", without offering details of what constituted "doing business" with Iran.

China is Iran's largest trading partners, followed by Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and India, according to BBC. 

Tharu community to celebrate Maghi in Tundikhel

The Tharu community living in the Kathmandu Valley is going to celebrate the Maghi festival in Tundikhel, Kathmandu. In coordination with the Tharu Welfare Society and jointly organized by various Tharu associations. The festival will be celebrated on Jan 14-15.

Tharu National Maghi Festival Coordinator Premi Lal Chaudhary informed that the two-day festival is being celebrated for the Tharu language, culture and public awareness.

The organizers have stated that Prime Minister Sushila Karki will inaugurate the Maghi festival. Chaudhary said that before the main program, Tharu culture, costumes, and musical instruments will gather in Basantapur on Jan 15 and participate in Tundikhel by touring various places.

The Maghi Festival, which is being organized with the main slogan of “Our mission to preserve and promote Tharu art and culture, our mission to preserve and promote it,” will feature more than 100 stalls featuring Tharu cuisine, exhibitions and sales, Tharu skills and handicrafts, and book exhibitions.

Similarly, the festival will feature Tharu cultural dances and songs such as Maghauta, Sakhiya, Hurdaganwa, Jhumra, Chokra, Dinnachuwa, Ragani, Badonacha, Hori, Jharra, Lathhawa, and Mugranhawa, according to the organizers.

Nepse plunges by 5. 54 points on Monday

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) plunged by 5. 54 points to close at 2, 635. 00 points on Monday. 

Similarly, the sensitive index dropped by 1. 61 points to close at 454. 31 points.

A total of 12,309,744-unit shares of 333 companies were traded for Rs 1. 50 billion.

Meanwhile, SY Panel Nepal Limited (SYPNL) and Shreenagar Agritech Industries Limited (SAIL) were the top gainers today with their price surging by 10. 00 percent.

Likewise, Super Madi Hydropower Limited (SMHL) was the top loser as its price fell by 4. 25 percent.

At the end of the day, the total market capitalization stood at Rs 4. 42 trillion.

 

NC Gen Secy Thapa presents political proposal at Special General Convention

Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has presented a political proposal on contemporary issues at the closed session being held as part of the party’s two-day Special General Convention. The event began on Sunday at the local Bhrikutimandap.

The proposal highlights the relevance of the Special General Convention in the aftermath of the September 8–9 Gen Z movement, the legal validity of the SGC, the Congress’s historical traditions, the current political context, and the policy resolutions of the convention.

It also incorporates issues related to general elections, the development of an advanced democracy and a pluralistic society, ending the practice of pre-election alliances, good governance and corruption control, and reforms in the electoral system, among others.

 

NC's SGC proposes dissolution of central leadership

A closed session of the Special General Convention (SGC) of the Nepali Congress endorsed the SGC Working Procedure, 2082 on Monday. 

The closed session going on at Bhrikutimandap in the federal capital proposed the dissolution of the existing Central Executive Committee. 

According to the endorsed document, the term of the Central Executive Committee elected by the 14th General Convention (Dec10–14, 2021) has already expired. 

The document further stated that a new Central Executive Committee will be elected until the 15th General Convention is convened.

As per the approved working procedure, the Party President shall chair the Special Central General Convention. 

In the absence of the President, the senior-most member present, based on age, shall preside over the session.

Likewise, for the facilitation and continuity of the closed session under the Special General Convention, a five-member presidium shall be elected.
