PMC issues notice to remove encroached structures

The Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality (PMC) has issued a notice directing the removal of structures built by encroaching land allocated for a bus park in Prithvi Chowk, Pokhara.

Originally designated for this purpose fifty years ago, the land has drastically reduced from 205 ropani to 47 ropani due to lack of proper management.

At present, more than 400 families of landless squatters inhabit this land, resulting in persistent traffic congestion as buses operate from the adjacent road belt rather than a designated bus park.

The PMC's recent resolution follows a meeting of its executive body, during which a 35-day notice was issued for the removal of encroachment structures.

This initiative is in line with similar actions in the federal capital, Kathmandu, aimed at clearing encroached public land.

Landless citizens will be identified and provided with sustainable solution: PM Shah

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said that the government is working on a systematic, transparent and sustainable solution after identifying the real situation of landless citizens in the country.

Taking to his private social media account this morning, Prime Minister Shah has said that arrangements shall be made for safe and organized relocation of citizens living in vulnerable locations.

In the case of other landless citizens, the Government will take the necessary decision based on the recommendations of the concerned authorities and the collected details.

The government's attention has been drawn towards the various comments and interpretations being made in the public regarding the landless management process initiated by the Government in accordance with the law in areas where there has been clear evidence of encroachment on riverbanks and public-owned land in the Kathmandu Valley.

"The government has taken serious note of the attempts being made to create suspicions among landless citizens and citizens forced to live in unorganized settlements and to spread fear in a planned manner regarding the said process."

Prime Minister Shah has said that some sections of the Land Act 2021 BS, which were an obstacle to the implementation of a long-term solution, have been repealed through an ordinance in view of the current situation, and with the removal of this legal obstacle, the work of collecting digital data of genuine landless citizens, verifying details, and preparing records on a clear basis has been initiated.

He said that the government would like to clarify that all the steps taken are not with the intention of evicting citizens, but with the aim of ensuring the right to housing and finding a permanent solution to the problem. Therefore, all citizens are requested not to fall into any kind of doubts, not to panic unnecessarily, and not to spread unverified information.

Prime Minister Shah has, in the message, also assured that the government is fully committed to ensuring safe, decent, and permanent housing for every landless citizen, and that no citizen will be left homeless.

Tottenham climb out of relegation zone with win at Aston Villa

Tottenham Hotspur eased their Premier League relegation fears with a vital 2-1 victory at Aston Villa to move above West Ham United and out of the bottom three on Sunday, Reuters reported.

West Ham's defeat by Brentford the day before opened the door for Tottenham and they took full advantage with Conor Gallagher's low shot and Richarlison's header punishing a lacklustre Villa inside the opening 25 minutes.

Fifth-placed Villa were poor as they appeared to have one eye on Thursday's Europa League semi-final, second leg against Nottingham Forest and their only effort on target was Emiliano Buendia's consolation header seconds before the final whistle.

Chivu draws on playing days as Inter seal Serie A title

Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu said his own experiences as a player helped him guide the club to a 21st Serie A title after Sunday’s 2-0 home win over Parma left them with an unassailable lead at the top of the table, Reuters reported.

The 45-year-old, appointed in June, spent seven seasons at Inter as a player and was part of Jose Mourinho’s treble‑winning side in 2010. He took charge after last season’s bitter finish, when Inter lost the title on the final day before suffering a 5-0 Champions League defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.

"I just try to be the best version of myself, to help these lads who sometimes need the carrot, sometimes the stick," Chivu told DAZN Italia, according to Reuters.
