FM participates in FAO conference
Minister of Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba has participated in the high level ministerial special eventorganized during the ongoing 44th Session of the General Conference of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at its headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Addressing conference Rana called on the global community to act together towards building food systems that nourish our people and protect our future, leaving no one behind.
There is a need to build a future where no child suffers from stunting, no mother is left without nourishment, and no community is denied the right to a healthy life, the foreign minister said. While underscoring the need for international partnerships, predictable financing, and accessible technology in securing safe and nutritional food for all people in the world, particularly for those living in the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDs, the Foreign Minister called for scaled-up investment in transforming our food systems, means to adapt to climate change, and the resources to help build the resilience of these group of countries.
Iran could start enriching uranium for bomb within months, UN nuclear chief says
Iran has the capacity to start enriching uranium again - for a possible bomb - in "a matter of months", the head of the UN's nuclear watchdog has said, BBC reported.
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the US strikes on three Iranian sites last weekend had caused severe but "not total" damage, contradicting Donald Trump's claim that Iran's nuclear facilities were "totally obliterated".
"Frankly speaking, one cannot claim that everything has disappeared and there is nothing there," Grossi said on Saturday.
Israel attacked nuclear and military sites in Iran on 13 June, claiming Iran was close to building a nuclear weapon, according to BBC.
PHC conducts hearing on two proposed justices
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) on Sunday conducted hearing on two proposed justices of the Supreme Court.
The Committee conducted the hearing on senior advocate Megh Raj Pokharel and Chief Judge of High Court Janakpur, Shreekanta Poudel.
Stating that there is a big gap between the theory and practical exercise, committee member Janardan Sharma shared the reality that development construction activities were affected while delivering decisions by the judiciary on the cases against the principle of separation of powers.
Similarly, another member Shyam Kumar Ghimire commented that a tendency of keeping the political cases aside has increased.
Likewise, committee members—Mahesh Kumar Bartaula, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal, Jag Prasad Sharma, Leela Shrestha and Sunita Baral raised various questions to the proposed justices.
They stressed that justices should present themselves strongly to maintain good governance in the judiciary.
A meeting of the Judicial Council held on June 13 had recommended senior advocate Pokharel, Judge Poudel and another Judge Shanti Singh Thapa for parliamentary hearing.
Nepal-Pakistan Children Park inaugurated
Nepal-Pakistan Children Park was inaugurated at Ward No. 8, Budhanilkantha Municipality. The park was jointly developed by the Embassy of Pakistan in Kathmandu and Budhanilkantha Municipality. Ambassador Abrar H Hashmi and Mayor Mitharam Adhikari attended the ceremony along with representatives from local government, civil society, and the community.
Hashmi appreciated the partnership with Budhanilkantha Municipality for the renovation of Nepal-Pakistan Children Park as well as the Embassy team for upgrading and the beautification of children park play station, swings and a new walking track, a space for all ages. “The park features upgraded play equipment, swings, and a walking track, providing a recreational space for all age groups. It was dedicated to the children of the Golfutar community as a gift from the people of Pakistan,” the Embassy said in a statement. This is the third park renovated by the Embassy in the past three years in partnership with local municipalities.
Nepse surges by 30. 09 points on Sunday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) gained 30. 09 points to close at 2,625. 84 points on Sunday.
Similarly, the sensitive index surged by 5. 34 points to close at 449. 24 points.
A total of 16,643,114-unit shares of 328 companies were traded for Rs 7. 12 billion.
Meanwhile, Saptakoshi Development Bank Ltd (SAPDBL) was the top gainer today, with its price surging by 9. 99 percent. Likewise, Joshi Hydropower Development Company Ltd (JOSHI) was the top loser as its price fell by 5. 57 percent.
At the end of the day, total market capitalization stood at Rs 1. 47 trillion.
Butwal-Narayangadh road section obstructed
The Butwal- Narayangadh road section has been completely obstructed due to floods in the river in Dumkibas area of Nawalpur (Bardghat Susta East).
After the flood, traffic has been affected on the diversion operated for cargo vehicles and also on the alternative road used for small and passenger vehicles at Binayi Khola in Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality-1, said Superintendent of Police Yadav Dhakal at the District Police Office Nawalparasi (Bardghat Susta East).
“Currently, the traffic has been halted at the diversion and along the alternative route for this road section via Hongsi Gate and Jyamire,” he said.
According to him, the water level in the Kharange rivulet in Binayi Triveni-3 has increased due to the rain, which has completely blocked the alternative route.
Serbia police clash with anti-government protesters in Belgrade
Serbian police have clashed with a huge crowd of anti-government protesters demanding an early election and end to President Aleksandar Vucic's 12-year rule in the capital Belgrade, BBC reported.
A sea of around 140,000 protesters rallied in the city, the largest turnout in recent months, as student-led demonstrations mount pressure on the populist government. "We want elections!" the crowd chanted.
Dozens have been arrested, with riot police seen firing tear gas and stun grenades.
President Vucic accused protesters calling for an election of being part of a foreign plot trying to usurp his country. "They wanted to topple Serbia, and they have failed," he wrote on his Instagram page, according to BBC.
President Paudel participates in paddy transplanting ceremony
A paddy transplantation ceremony was organized at the President House, Shital Niwas to commemorate the National Paddy Day today.
President Ram Chandra Paudel and First Lady Sabita Paudel also participated in the transplanting of paddy seedlings.
Inaugurating the rice planting on the occasion, the Head of the State spoke on the need of modernizing and commercializing the country's agriculture.
He said that he participated symbolically in the plantation to promote a culture of respect for all kinds of labor, including agriculture, and to encourage rice production.
The President emphasized that farmers, who are engaged in agriculture and are striving to introduce it as a pillar of employment, should be honoured as food producers.
