Political status and position can't give immunity: Home Minister Shrestha
Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha said that the government is committed to ensuring good governance. In a meeting with local residents in Maisthan of Bardibas-4 this morning, the DPM promised to intensify the action against corruption. "No matter what wrongdoing must face action, now you can't get immunity with political status and position", Minister Shrestha said. As leaders of the political parties did not realize their responsibilities and obligations, the people have so far been deprived of good governance, he further said. He also said that Police, administrative authorities and related parties should listen directly to the victims and give a solution but not through any middlemen or intermediaries. For example, the people tried to rise up against the act of usury, they did not get the expected support from the people's representatives. On Saturday, Minister Shrestha had addressed programs held at district headquarters Jaleshwar and in Ramgopalpur.
Passenger vehicles asked to carry dustbin
Byas Municipality of Tanahun has written to the local public transport committees to ensure that all passenger vehicles have a dustbin to collect garbage from passengers. A correspondence has been made with instructions for the management of mandatory dustbin in vehicles that provide public transport service within the municipality area, said Chief Administrative Officer Gangalal Subedi. The transport committees have also been asked to inform the passengers not to throw garbage outside of the vehicle. Anyone found littering against the said provision will be fined Rs 3,000 for the first offense and Rs 7,000 for the second offense. The municipality has written to Prithviraj Marg Transport Committee, Local Transport Pvt. Ltd., Byasabhumi Transport Pvt. Ltd., Taxi Entrepreneurs Committee and Auto Rickshaw Traders Committee. In addition, the municipality has appealed to all concerned not to carry out business in the streets and intersections and slaughter animals for meat only in designated places. The Byas Municipality is currently disposing garbage around Buddhasingh Highway in ward 13. It is looking for a permanent place to set up a landfill site for disposal of waste collected from the municipality.
UML stages protest in Parliament
The CPN-UML staged a protest in Parliament on Friday. The main opposition staged a protest regarding the attack on the party's central member and Koshi Province Assembly's Parliamentary Party deputy leader Ram Rana in Ilam district on Thursday. The parliamentarians representing the party stood up from their respective seats in a gesture of protest as soon as the meeting started. Speaker Devraj Ghimire then allocated time to UML lawmaker Yogesh Bhattarai to air views on the behalf of his party. Bhattarai asserted that instead of following the decision on the naming of Province 1 as Koshi Province that was made with two-thirds majority through democratic process despite some disapproving voices on March 1, 2023, many untoward activities are occurring lately. He said that "ambushes" were being laid and obstructions created in regard to the naming of the province. He also recalled and said that stones were pelted on UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and party's parliamentary deputy leader Subash Chandra Nemwang in Jhapa regarding the same. Furthermore, he also recalled the attack on Koshi Province's Deputy Speaker Srijana Danuwar's vehicle in Udayapur. Bhattarai demanded a response from the Home Minister regarding the death of a protester in Biratnagar in connection to the protest.
Nepal elected UN ECOSOC member for two years
Nepal has been elected as a member of the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2024-2026. The Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN in New York stated that Nepal has been elected the United Nations ECOSOC member with the highest number of 145 votes from the Asia-Pacific Group from the elections held on June 8 in New York. "With 145 votes, Nepal has been elected as a member of the UN ECOSOC for the term 2024-2026. We thank Member States for electing us. We look forward to working closely with all to achieve the 2030 agenda," the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN tweeted.
Private sector's collaboration crucial for advancing towards prosperity: PM Dahal
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the country's prosperity is not achievable without the involvement and collaboration of the private sector. He said the government is ready to facilitate the private sector to resolve the problems it has been facing, commending the role of the private sector to the economy. Inaugurating the Lumbini cable car promoted by the Butwal Hills here today, the head of the government said he wished to take the private sector together in a journey towards nation's development and prosperity. "The government is in favor of collaborating with the private sector in efforts to unlock investment opportunities," underlining the urgency of an economic revolution to revive post-Covid- 19 economy. He said the government earlier brought various economic packages for the cause of private sector. Commenting over the launching of a cable car in Lumbini, he said the operation of service in Lumbini, the birth of Gautam Buddha, would have its contribution not only to the local economy but also to the national level. The Prime Minister vowed to adopt necessary policy to regularize flights at Bhairahawa and Pokhara-based international airports, promote hotel and tourism infrastructures there, improve security arrangements and lengthen the duration of visitors' stay for what he said was a multidimensional development of the tourism sector. Underlining the need of reconsidering the country's development model, he said despite noticeable achievements in physical infrastructure, education, health, gender parity, and inclusion, expected achievements in production and employment creation were still awaited. Prime Minister Dahal clarified that there would be quality improvement in development and prosperity only if there is common determination. Saying an environment of investment is being created in Nepal, the Prime Minister said he in the course of his recent India visit called on Indian industrialists and entrepreneurs to invest in Nepal. Similarly, Province Chief of Lumbini province Amik Sherchan expressed his belief that the Lumbini cable car constructed connecting Butwal and Palpa would make a significant contribution in tourism promotion of the province. Chief Minister of Lumbini Province Dilli Bahadur Chaudhary mentioned that although there are immense potentials for tourism development in Lumbini Province, attention has not been paid in its promotion. He expressed his belief that construction of such types of infrastructures would make a significant contribution to the development of the tourism sector. Likewise, former Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel mentioned that Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, is an important heritage for the tourism development of the area and drew the attention of the government to fulfill its master plan. Regular operation of Gautam Buddha International Airport, expansion of Butwal-Gaindakot road, construction of Siddhababa tunnel route, construction of International-standard City Hall as well as other physical infrastructures constructed from private sector would become supportive for development and prosperity of Lumbini. Similarly, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India, Jagdambika Pal, said Lumbini has become a better tourism destination to the citizens of Uttar Pradesh as Lumbini is located near Nepal-India border area. Chairperson of Tinau Rural Municipality, Prem Shrestha, shared that the operation of cable car service would make a great contribution in the development of rural municipalities. Lumbini President of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Krishna Prasad Sharma, expected that the operation of cable car at Basantapur, the hill station of Palpa from Butwal would make improvement in business and trade of Rupandehi. The cable car is around three kilometers long and it is operated from Golpark Bamghat of Butwal sub-metropolitan city-3 to Basantapur of Tinau rural municipality-3 in Palpa district. It is the first cable car in Lumbini Province.
Hot air to continue for next five days
Hot air or loo is likely to continue in the Tarai belt of the country. The Weather Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology urged one and all to adopt necessary alert measures to keep protected from the possible consequences. Issuing a special bulletin on hot air and loo, the Division urged the public to remain cautious of the abrupt rise in maximum and minimum temperatures and subsequent effects in the southern plain areas for at least next five days. 'As per the study and analysis of lower and upper environments, it seems this year's monsoon arrival will still take some more days in Nepal. Thus, hot air and loo will continue to prevail in the southern plains of the country for additional five days. The general public are requested to adopt cautionary measures to get protected from rising temperature', the bulletin stated. As temperature is predicted to gradually increase in the mountainous areas as well, the general public are asked to remain updated on the alerts issued by the division, the bulletin noted. Meteorologist Govinda Kumar Jha said loo is predicted to prevail for next five days. 'Loo has continued in most of the territories of Tarai for the past couple of days. Temperature has exceeded 40 degree Celsius from the central part of Tarai to Bhairahawa area. Areas, including Nepalgunj also have witnessed 40 plus degree temperature which has resulted in hot waves', he further shared. Loo is a strong hot wind which is considered to prevail when temperature continuously remains 40 plus degree Celsius for five days. Meteorologist Jha further said loo was prevailing with the rise in temperature and dryness in lack of rain. Presently there is a higher effect of westerly wind and local wind in the country. It is predicted that mountainous belts of the country will witness partial to general changes. The Kathmandu Valley has witnessed minimum temperature of 17.5 degree and maximum 32 degree Celsius today.
People compelled to drink impure water in Nawalparasi
Locals of Dhodeni in Gaindakot Municiplaity-3, Nawalprasi (Bardaghat-Susta-East) have long been compelled to fetch drinking water from a distant rivulet. The residents here have to climb up two hours to fetch a jar of water from a rivulet. Generally, the local people moved to the rivulet early in the morning and returned with a jar of water in the afternoon. Saraswoiti Acharya, a local, said there has always been a problem of drinking water in the area. 'The folks of Dhodeni have been facing acute problem of drinking water. One has to fetch a jar containing 20 liters of water from a distant rivulet', the 40-year-old Acharya added. 'All houses here have been installed with drinking water meter, but there is no water supply', she said, adding, 'One has to spend whole day to fetch limited water quantity'. The Dhodeni folks are being compelled to drink impure water from the Lahara rivulet in lack of tap water supply. The rivulet is around a kilometer away from Dhodeni having 150 households.
'Earning by learning, learning by earning program' in Gandaki
The Gandaki Province government has decided to extend support for the operation of 'learning by earning, earning by learning' program in public schools running technical and vocational education. It was included in the Gandaki Province government's annual policies and programs for the fiscal year 2080/81. An umbrella act will be framed to effectively implement technical education through one door policy within the province. The province has put forth a plan to formulate scholarship procedural guideline to expand the access to higher education of the most disadvantaged, Dalit, people with disability, children of conflict survivors The province policies and programs have also included a measure to bring into mainstream the religious schools and alternative schools. The Gandaki government has come up with a plan to include the contents related to moral education, art, language, culture, customs, nationalities, history, natural, religious, mythological, literature, gender mainstreaming and disaster risk reduction in the school curriculum. Under the 'province government with public campus', the Gandaki Province was planning to provide incentives based on the capacity and performance of all public campuses across the country. The province policy and program also included a plan to construct and operate a well-equipped residential school in collaboration with federal and local governments for the assurance of the right to education of the children having intellectual disability.
