Revenue of Rs 50 million raised through passport camp in Portugal

Revenue amounting to Rs 52.2 million has been collected from the passport service camp that was operated targeting Nepali immigrants facing passport-related problems in Portugal. The month-long camp held in Portugal raised the revenue amount, informed Deepak Adhikari, Non-Resident Nepali Ambassador to Portugal and also the Ambassador to France. A total of 2,308 Nepali people submitted applications for e-passports through the direct registration system. After completion of the process, passports would be distributed to concerned Nepali immigrants through the Consulate of Nepal in Lisbon. A team with technical human resources headed by Passport Department’s Section Officer Ranjeeta Dahal provided the passport service to the needy people in coordination and facilitation of the Honorary Consulate of Nepal in Lisbon. The camp conducted from March 29 through April 25 had collected application forms for new and renewed passports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal had run the camp, especially for Nepali immigrants facing trouble due to the unavailability of passports and other documents. Ambassador Adhikari shared most of the Nepali immigrants having trouble were benefitted in the camp. “Lately majority of Nepali people bound to Europe enter Portugal through different countries. Nepali people entering Portugal through different ways are increasingly facing problems related to documents for not being able to secure their passport”, he added. “Without passport, no document related process is possible in foreign country. This is more problematic in the country where there is no embassy. Therefore, one needs to adopt cautionary measures to keep their passports safe”, Ambassador Adhikari added.

Toddler killed in Makwanpur jeep hit

A toddler died after being hit by a jeep in Hetauda of Makwanpur on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as two-year-old Samar Lo of Simaltar. The jeep (Pradesh 03-001Cha 1597) hit him this morning. Critically injured in the incident, he breathed his last during the course of treatment at the Hetauda Hospital. Police said that they have impounded the vehicle and arrested its driver for investigation.  

Mt Dhaulagiri sees first ascent of this season

Two Polish nationals have successfully climbed Mt Dhaulagiri. Mt Dhaulagiri (8,167 meters) is the seventh highest peak in the world. With this, the peak recorded the first climbing of this season. According to Seven Summit Trek's managing director Thaneswor Guragai, Bartek Ziemski and Oswald Rodrigo Pereria stood atop the summit at 7: 30 am on Tuesday without the help of Sherpa guides. According to the Department of Tourism, 24 males and 11 females have taken permission for the Dhaulagiri expedition in this season and the Seven Summit has facilitated the expeditions of 26 climbers. Dhaulagiri that lies in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality- 4 in Myagdi observed the first climbing on May 13, 1960 by Austrian Kurt Diemberger, German Peter Diener, Swish Ernst Forrer and Albin Schelbert  and Sherpa guides Nawang Dorje and Nima Dorje.  

Speaker Ghimire insists on utilization of information technology for achievement

Speaker Devraj Ghimire has said a significant achievement in education, social and health sectors is possible in Nepal-like countries through the highest use of information technology (IT). In his message of best wishes on the occasion of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day today, the Speaker underscored the need for awareness and some policy-level provisions for the proper utilization of communications technology. "The use of IT has converted the world to a single village, but still challenges remain for making it safe, reliable and widely accessible," the Speaker said, adding Nepal has potential to advance towards economic development and prosperity with the creation of job opportunities by using IT. The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is observed on May 17 each year following the decision of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, in 2006. This year the Day is celebrated with the theme of “Empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies.”  

'Radha' being screened at La Femme Independent Film Festival

The number of Nepali films being nominated and screened at international film festivals continue to rise, with "The Secrets of Radha" being the latest one. After 'Kalopothi', and 'Seto Surya' many films have been selected for the festivals while some have even won different awards. Released last year, 'The Secrets of Radha' is currently participating in various festivals. Directed by Suwanar Thapa, this film has been nominated for the 'La Femme Independent Film Festival' being held in Cannes, France. According to director Thapa, it has been nominated in seven categories including script, direction, acting and cinematography. "La Femme Independent Film Festival" has been organized since 2005 with the aim of giving space to female filmmakers and female characters. "The aim of our Festival is to support all women to work in the field of cinema, to screen all the films that discuss stories or issues about or for women or made by women", says the official website of the film festival. Actress Shristi Shrestha is playing the lead role in the film 'The Secrets of Radha', based on a story of women's endurance. The festival is coming to a close on May 23.  

Westerly wind brings light rain in some parts of country including Kathmandu

Some parts of the country including the Kathmandu Valley today experienced light rainfall due to the influence of the Westerly and the local winds. According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the weather is cloudy in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and isolated rain is likely in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagamati and Gandaki provinces. The Kathmandu Valley witnessed brief rainfall today, said Division’s meteorologist Sameer Shrestha. No impact of Cyclone Mocha As the Division said, there will be no impact of Cyclone Mocha developing in the Bay of Bengal. The Cyclone Mocha is moving towards east and Nepal is not likely to see its impact. It will have its major impacts on Bhutan, Bangladesh, Thailand and Myanmar, according to him. Now Mocha has taken pace and is moving towards the coastal areas of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

621 cases of fire with 16 casualties reported in one month

There were 621 incidences of fire including forest fires in a month in the country. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the country recorded 527 cases of fire and 94 wildfires between April 14 and May 13. The death casualties in these incidences were 16: 11 in fire and five in forest fires while 65 have been injured. According to Authority deputy-secretary, Sundar Prasad Sharma, with the increasing temperature, the incidences of fire take place each day, causing the losses of lives and property. The failed attempts to douse the fire without any safety measures generally resulted in deaths, he said, urging one and all not to take any risk of life during the fire and not to intervene it without taking safety measures. Green tree branches and soil can be used along with water to control forest fire, according to the Authority which urges all not smoke in forest area, not to throw away burning cigarette butt near the forest, to make sure it is no more burning during its management and bury the fire remnants in soil.

One dead, seven injured in Rolpa tractor accident

A labourer has died after a tractor fell off the road at Machheti village in Lungri Rural Municipality-5, Rolpa on Thursday.

Khemraj Roka (13) died and seven others were injured after a tractor (Ra 1 Ta 3881) met with an accident last night, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Rolpa district Shyam Saru Magar said.

Police said that the tractor was heading towards Kilachaur area by taking the labourers for their night stay after their work for the road construction at Domai of Lungri Rural Municipality. The injured ones are receiving treatment at a primary health post at Sulichaur in the district, according to the police.
