UN to take over al-Hol camp for IS families in Syria after unrest
The United Nations (UN) says it will take over management of a camp in north-eastern Syria holding holding thousands of people with alleged links to the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), BBC reported.
It comes after Kurdish-led forces that had been running the camp withdrew in the face of an advance by Syrian government forces, triggering unrest that forced aid agencies to suspend operations.
Residents were reported to have rushed camp perimeters in an apparent attempt to escape, prompting unrest and looting, according to BBC.
Trump sparks anger over claim Nato troops avoided Afghanistan front line
Donald Trump has sparked fresh outrage in the UK after saying Nato troops stayed "a little off the front lines" during the war in Afghanistan, BBC reported.
Labour MP Emily Thornberry, the chair of the foreign affairs committee, called it an "absolute insult" to the 457 British service personnel killed in the conflict, while Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said: "How dare he question their sacrifice?"
Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty, who served in Afghanistan, said it was "sad to see our nation's sacrifice, and that of our Nato partners, held so cheaply".
US unveils plans for 'New Gaza' with skyscrapers
The US has unveiled its plans for a "New Gaza" that would see the devastated Palestinian territory rebuilt from scratch, BBC reported.
Slides showed dozens of skyscrapers stretching along the Mediterranean coast and housing estates in the Rafah area, while a map outlining the phased development of new residential, agricultural and industrial areas for the 2.1 million population.
They were presented during a signing ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos for President Donald Trump's new Board of Peace, which is tasked with ending the two-year war between Israel and Hamas and overseeing reconstruction, according to BBC.
EC scraps Resham Chaudhary's nomination
The Election Commission (EC) has scrapped the nomination of Resham Chaudhary for the House of Representatives (HoR) election from Kailali constituency-1 following an investigation into a complaint filed against him.
However, the complaints lodged against the HoR election candidates from constituency-2 of Sunsari, constituency-1 of Rautahat, and constituency-2 of Bhaktapur lacked sufficient claims, assistant spokesperson at the Election Commission, Kul Bahadur GC, says. .
Similarly, a complaint registered in Rautahat district was rejected on Wednesday.
The EC conducted an investigation into the complaints from 3 pm on Wednesday, which concluded at 5 pm on Thursday.
The Election Commission is publishing the list of the candidates under the first-past-the-post shortly.
Border points tightened to prevent possible entry of Nipah virus
The Government of Nepal has heightened alertness nationwide to prevent the possible entry of the Nipah virus, following its recent spread in India’s neighbouring state of West Bengal.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr Prakash Budhathoki, said the government has put adequate preventive measures in place.
Health screenings have been initiated for passengers arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport, as well as at major border points with India.
“We have intensified surveillance particularly at border points in Koshi Province. Similar health checks have also been ordered at other border crossings,” Dr Budhathoki said.
Warning of the virus’s severity, he said Nipah infection can lead to fatal outcomes if not treated promptly. According to him, the mortality rate among infected patients ranges between 30 and 33 percent.
The Nipah virus primarily spreads through infected bats and pigs and can also be transmitted from person to person.
Probe Commission deadline extended by 20 days
The deadline of the Probe Commission formed by the government to probe the damages occurred during the September 8 and 9 Gen Z movement has been extended by 20 days.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers today took a decision to this effect, confirmed Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal.
The Commission was formed by the Cabinet decision on September 21, 2025 under the chair of former judge GauriBahadur Karki.
It comprises former Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Bigyan Raj Sharma and legal expert BishweshworBhandari as members.
The term of the Commission has been extended again for the second time at the proposal of the Home Ministry as preparation of the report was underway though the three-month deadline was given to the Commission in the beginning.
The term of the commission ended today itself.
Similarly, the government has decided to accept grant assistance of USD two million from the Asian InfrastructureInvestment Bank for the Butwal-Pokhara section upgrading project.
Likewise, Home Minister Aryal has been appointed as the government spokesperson.
Other decisions of the meeting would be made public in a regular press meeting, it has been said.
95 polling centers classified as highly-sensitive in Jhapa
The Security Bodies have classified voting stations in three groups in order to make voters and polling centers in Jhapa fear-free for upcoming elections to the House of Representatives.
Chief District Officer Shiva Lal Gelal said 95 voting centers in the district have been classified as highly –sensitive.
Out of 285 polling centers in the district, 147 voting centres have been identified as sensitive while 43 as normal.
The district has 815 polling stations.
Gelal added that Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal and Nepali Army would be mobilized to hold the March 5 elections in a fear-free environment.
He stated that additional security personnel have been requested from the provincial police office, as the current situation demands greater security measures than in previous instances due to the heightened security sensitivity in Jhapa Constituency-5.
There are five constituencies as well as 713,537 voters in Jhapa.
Nepse surges by 9. 23 points on Thursday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) gained 9. 23 points to close at 2, 714. 61 points on Thursday.
The sensitive index, however, dropped by 0. 47 points to close at 465. 42 points.
A total of 19,075,756-unit shares of 332 companies were traded for Rs 1. 55 billion.
Meanwhile, SY Panel Nepal Limited (SYPNL), Shreenagar Agritech Industries Limited (SAIL) and Trishuli Jal Vidhyut Company Limited (TVCL) were the top gainers today, with their price surging by 10. 00 percent.
Likewise, Kalika power Company Ltd (KPCL) was the top loser as its price fell by 6. 25 percent.
At the end of the day, total market capitalization stood at Rs 4. 55 trillion.
