Weather to remain fair today

There is no impact of any significant weather system in the country.

It will be generally fair today, according to the Weather Forecasting Division.

The weather service, however, informed that high hills and mountainous areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces will be partly cloudy tonight.  

The Kathmandu Valley recorded a minimum temperature at 6 degree Celsius at 5:45am. The maximum temperature will remain between 17 to 19 degree Celsius today, the Division added.

 

 

Nepal reiterates anti-corruption stand at UN event

The government has expressed a firm commitment to launching a campaign against corruption so that integrity and good governance would be established.

Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Gobinda Bahadur Karkee, on Tuesday, made such commitment while addressing a session under the 11th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) themed 'Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity' in Doha, Qatar.

In his statement, Secretary Karkee informed that the current government in Nepal had adopted a strict zero-tolerance policy against corruption, and pursued robust legal, administrative and institutional reforms. 

He highlighted the efforts and commitments of the interim government formed following the historic public movement aimed at promoting good governance and controlling corruption. 

Secretary Karkee shared before the global community about the measures taken by the Nepal government in criminalizing bribery, abuse of authority, illicit enrichment, money laundering, and related offences in line with UNCAC.

The leader of the Nepali delegation reaffirmed Nepal’s unwavering commitment to the UNCAC, and shed light on the obligations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Action Plan, and the Second National Strategy and Action Plan against Corruption being finalized.

The conference is considered the world’s largest gathering dedicated to combating corruption. It began on Tuesday.

 

 

FinMin Khanal stresses Nepal-China economic cooperation

Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has underscored the need for reinforcing economic cooperation between Nepal and China and increasing investment accordingly.

In his address at a program on Nepal-China cooperation and investment organized on Tuesday, Finance Minister Khanal informed that the Nepal government had launched various schemes for economic reform, so Chinese investors could mobilize their capital with confidence.

Nepal and China can further enhance cooperation by identifying various sectors of investment so that it could help attract foreign investment, according to him.

On the occasion, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song, talked on multidimensional relations between China and Nepal. 

China is interested in investing in industry, energy and construction of infrastructures in Nepal, he informed.

UML National Congress: Voting begins

Although voting in the ongoing 11th National Congress of the CPN UML was said to begin from 8:00, it began delaying an hour.

The National Congress to elect new leadership in UML is going on at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu. 

It was inaugurated by Chairman, KP Sharma Oli, at Sallaghari, Bhaktapur last Saturday. 

KP Sharma Oli and Ishwor Pokharel are vying for the post of chairman. Oli is in re-election bid for the third time in a row.

A total of 660 leaders have filed candidacies for the 301-member central committee in the party. 

There are 80 machines installed for voting. As many as 2,263 representatives are attending the convention.

The leadership-changing convention of the UML is held in the wake of the Sept 8-9 Gen Z movement that significantly influenced national politics. 

The event is observed with keen interest whether Oli, who had to step down as Prime Minister of the coalition government following the Gen Z movement, will be reelected chairman for the third time to reinforce his power in the party or gets drubbed by Pokharel. 

The Oli-led faction has claimed that it is an adverse situation facing the party and country, which warrants a leadership of able person, while Pokharel and his panel have asserted that Oli should not continue considering the anti-incumbency atmosphere, especially after the Gen Z movement.

HoR election: 78 days to go for voting

The Election Commission (EC) has made a new provision on use of flags during the election campaigning.

In the March 5 election to the House of Representatives (HoR), EC proposed a new provision in the election code of conduct, as per which, the political parties would not be allowed to carry more than 10 flags. 

Such a scheme is being introduced to curb the misuse of the flag. 

The office of the party or election candidate can place a flag prepared with fabric (3 x 4 feet) or have a signboard of the same size. The political parties are not allowed to use digital board, flex, or glue signboard, and audio visual materials as the flag. 

The proposed code of conduct has further reminded the political parties to not visit the voters' doorstep in a group of over 25 persons. 

The election campaigning will be further deterred using musical bands and pageants. 

 

Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu celebrates Victory Day

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu celebrated Victory Day 2025 by organizing a special program at its premises on Tuesday.

The event that began at 10 am with the hoisting of the national flag and the playing of the national anthem was followed by a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War. Special prayers were offered for the martyrs of the Liberation War and those who lost their lives during the July–August mass uprising in 2024. Messages from the President, the Chief Adviser, and the Adviser for Foreign Affairs highlighting the significance of the day were also read.

The program was further enriched by the performance of the students of Kathmandu art school and by a musical performance from Saraswati Khatri of Nepal’s Sur Sudha Music Group, who sang a selection of Bangla and Nepali songs.

During the event, SAARC Secretary General Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar emphasized the importance of Victory Day and called on the audience to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War. He highlighted the need to work collectively to seize the opportunities created by the July–August mass uprising to build a discrimination-free and inclusive Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Md. Shafiqur Rahman delivered the closing remarks, paying tribute to the martyrs and wounded freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War and honoring the martyrs of the July uprising. 

He said the July uprising added a new dimension to the nation’s journey, advancing the unfinished goals of the Liberation War and paving the way for a fair, just, corruption-free, and inclusive “Bangladesh 2.0,” as envisioned by the freedom fighters.

The program was attended by Bangladeshi officials serving at the SAARC Secretariat, expatriates in regional organizations in Nepal, officials from Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ Nepal Office, members of the Bangladeshi community, and distinguished Nepali personalities and business leaders. Adding to the festive atmosphere, players and officials of the visiting Bangladeshi women’s football club, Nasrin Sports Academy, also participated in the celebrations.

 

 

NICCI bids farewell to Vice President Ravi Rayavaram

The Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce & Industry (NICCI) on Monday bid farewell to its Vice President Ravi Rayavaram at a program held in the NICCI Secretariat.

Rayavaram, Managing Director of Surya Nepal—an ITC subsidiary—has been serving as NICCI vice president since last year. Following his promotion and transfer to Kolkata, he was replaced by Gaurav Tayal.

Speaking at the event, Rayavaram said, “ I felt like in my home,” during his tenure with NICCI.

NICCI President Sunil KC, while handing over a token of love and a letter of appreciation, said Rayavaram’s contribution to NICCI and to Nepal’s economy through his leadership of Surya Nepal had been significant. “We will cherish his memories,” KC said.

NICCI Executive Committee Member Sashi Kant Agrawal wished Rayavaram success in his new role and expressed hope of welcoming him back to Nepal in a bigger capacity in the future.

Indian Business Forum (IBF) Co-chair under NICCI, Saibal Ghosh, thanked Rayavaram for his active role in NICCI and his contribution to bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

NICCI Vice President Kunal Kayal and other executive members, including National Insurance Chief Executive Officer Navneet Gupta and Uttam Lama, also acknowledged Rayavaram’s dedication and service.

The newly appointed Managing Director of Surya Nepal, Gaurav Tayal, thanked Rayavaram and NICCI for their support.

Fifa brings in new £45 ticket for 2026 World Cup

Fifa has introduced a small number of "more affordable" $60 (£45) tickets for all 104 matches at the 2026 World Cup following criticism of its pricing structure for the tournament, BBC reported. 

World football's governing body says the new ticket price will be available to a certain number of "loyal fans" of the countries that have qualified for the World Cup.

A Fifa official close to discussions said: "We have listened to feedback and this new category is the right thing to do" - adding the decision was unanimous, according to BBC.
