Peter Magyar sworn in as Hungary’s PM, ending Orban’s 16 years in power
Peter Magyar has been sworn in as Hungary’s new prime minister, almost a month after parliamentary elections that ended Viktor Orban’s 16 years in power, Aljazeera reported.
Magyar, 45, who leads the centre-right Tisza party, was propelled into office on promises of change after years of economic stagnation under Orban, and strained ties with key allies, including the European Union.
Lebanon says Israeli strikes killed 39
Thirty-nine people have been killed in another day of intense Israeli strikes in Lebanon, the country's health ministry said, BBC reported.
One Israeli strike on the southern town of Saksakiyeh killed at least seven people, including a child, the ministry said.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had been targeting Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and was "aware of reports regarding harm to uninvolved civilians".
EU reaffirms its commitment to support Nepal in essential sectors
The European Union (EU) has shown its dedication to assist Nepal in vital areas identified by the current government.
The EU Ambassador Veronique Lorenzo today met with Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Sasmit Pokharel, at the latter's office in Singh Durbar and discussed potential areas of collaboration.
On the occasion, Minister Pokharel recognized the EU's substantial contributions to Nepal's educational landscape, emphasizing initiatives focused on ensuring equitable access, enhancing quality, and promoting professional development for teachers.
He expressed hope for future partnerships in areas such as inclusive education, infrastructure improvement, and further professional growth for educators.
Ambassador Lorenzo reiterated the EU's commitment to supporting the priority sectors highlighted by Nepal's new administration.
Kirati joins Shram Sanskriti Party
Sudan Kirati, former Minister and member of the Presidium Council of Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party (PLP), joined the Sharam Sanskriti Party on Friday.
Kirati, a former Maoist leader, had been associated with the PLP, which was formed before the last House of Representatives (HoR) elections.
Shram Sanskriti Party Chair Harka Sangpang Rai officially welcomed Kirati into the party during a program today.
'Diplomatic efforts on to resolve Lipulek, Kalapani border disputes'
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said the government is making efforts to resolve the border issues concerning the Limpiyadhura, Lipulek and Kalapani areas through diplomatic means.
Speaking at a program organized by the Ministry on Friday, Ministry Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri said the government has already made its position clear regarding Lipulek. "The Ministry is clear that diplomatic efforts are warranted to address these border issues."
He added that on May 3, the government had publicly stated that the pilgrimage route to the Kailash Mansarovar being operated between China and Nepal passes through Nepal's territory at Lipulek.
The 1816 Sugauli Treaty clearly states that Limpiyadhura, Lipulek and Kalapani, located to the east of the Mahakali River, are parts of Nepal, and the government's diplomatic efforts are underway to resolve the disputes based on this position, according to the Spokesperson.
He said that both neighbours: India and China, have been informed and reminded of Nepal's stance time and again.
Student organizations dismissed as per commitment paper: Minister Pokharel
Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokharel said that the student organizations were revoked in accordance with their commitment paper.
Talking to media persons at Singha Durbar today, also the Spokesperson of the government, Pokharel clarified that further discussion on the issue was not necessary as the people have already approved the commitment paper.
He mentioned that they have been receiving complaints that schools have charged extra admission or annual fee rather than determined criteria, adding discussion was held with office-bearers of Municipal Association, Rural Municipality Federation and representatives of Kathmandu Valley Mayors Forum on this issue.
"We are ready to support if any support of the federal government is needed for the implementation of determined criteria and rules. But it is mainly the responsibility of the local level. A regulatory body should regulate from its side," he underlined.
Nepse surges by 27. 49 points on Friday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) surged by 27. 49 points to close at 2, 745. 65 points on Friday.
Similarly, the sensitive index dropped by 3. 24 points to close at 467. 33 points.
A total of 7,478,562-unit shares of 335 companies were traded for Rs 1. 56 billion.
Meanwhile, Trishuli Jal Vidhyut Company Limited (TVCL) was the top gainer today with its price surging by 10. 00 percent.
Similarly, Swabalamban Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited (SWBBL) was the top loser as its price fell by 6. 54 points.
At the end of the day, the total market capitalization stood at Rs 4. 68!trillion.
Government dismisses 15 honorary consuls serving in various countries
The government has dismissed 15 honorary consuls serving in various countries.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Friday took the decision in this regard.
According to the government Spokesperson and Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokharel, the meeting decided to table the Protocol No. 29 of 2014 to the Forced Labour Convention of the International Labour Organisation 1930 at the Parliament for endorsement.
Similarly, the government also decided to table the Labour Inspection Convention, 1947 (No 81) in the Parliament for approval.
