Iranian FA says will meet FIFA to seek World Cup assurances in next few days
Iranian soccer chief Mehdi Taj said on Wednesday he will have a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the next three or four days at which he would seek assurances that his country will be respected at the World Cup in the United States, Reuters reported.
Canada, which is co-hosting the June 11 to July 19 World Cup with the U.S. and Mexico, said it refused entry to Taj last week because of his links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Taj said on Tuesday that Iran would not take part in the tournament if FIFA could not guarantee respect for the country's institutions in the U.S., where the team will be based and play all three of their group matches.
Holders PSG beat Bayern Munich to reach Champions League final with Arsenal
Holders Paris Saint-Germain set up a Champions League final against Arsenal after a 1-1 second-leg draw at Bayern Munich secured a 6-5 aggregate victory, AFP reported.
PSG exploded on the counter less than three minutes in on Wednesday and Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele put Luis Enrique’s visitors ahead on the night and two goals up in the tie.
PSG largely succeeded in subduing Bayern’s attacking threat, despite Harry Kane’s stoppage-time goal.
Casemiro backs Carrick for permanent Man United manager's job
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro says Michael Carrick has already shown he has all the qualities to be a great manager at the club and backed calls for the former England international to be given the role on a permanent basis, Reuters reported.
Carrick was handed the interim role until the end of the season after the club sacked Ruben Amorim in January following a turbulent 14-month spell.
United have won 10 of their 14 matches under Carrick, including victories over Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, to climb to third in the Premier League and seal a berth in next season's Champions League.
Saka sends Arsenal past Atletico into Champions League final
Arsenal reached the Champions League final for the second time in their history with a battling 1-0 home win over Atletico Madrid sealing a 2-1 aggregate victory in the semi-final on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
Captain Bukayo Saka’s tap-in just before the interval proved decisive for Arsenal to edge a cagey second-leg contest in which the hosts kept a ninth clean sheet in this season’s competition.
They will face either holders Paris St Germain, who knocked them out in last season’s semi-finals, or Bayern Munich in the Puskas Arena in Budapest on May 30 -- a week after they hope to have sealed their first Premier League title for 22 years.
