Ruthless Atletico punish Tottenham errors in Champions League rout

Atletico Madrid took a big step toward the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday with a 5-2 home win over Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their last-16 tie at the Metropolitano Stadium, Xinhua reported.

Tottenham coach Igor Tudor said before the match that he was prioritizing Premier League survival over European progress, and his side made a disastrous start as Atletico led 4-0 after 22 minutes.

Tudor started with Antonin Kinsky in goal, even though the 22-year-old had not played a minute in either the Champions League or the Premier League this season. A mistake from Kinsky gifted Atletico the lead in the sixth minute when he slipped while trying to play the ball out from the back, allowing Marcos Llorente a simple finish, according to Xinhua.

Bayern hit Atalanta for six in Bergamo masterclass

Bayern Munich crushed hosts Atalanta 6-1 in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday with a devastating display that left the Italian side shell-shocked before the interval, Reuters reported.

The German giants seized control from the outset and never looked back, racing to a three-goal lead within 25 minutes as their aggressive attacking play overwhelmed their opponents who never managed to gain a foothold in the match.

While the result was emphatic, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany refused to get carried away ahead of next Wednesday's return leg at the Allianz Arena, according to Reuters.

Man City to host Liverpool in FA Cup quarter-finals

Manchester City will face Liverpool in the headline fixture of the FA Cup quarter-final draw, while giant-killing Port Vale make the trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea, Reuters reported.

City and Liverpool will meet for the first time in the competition since the 2021-2022 semi-finals, a game Liverpool won at Wembley Stadium 3-2, thanks to Sadio Mane's brace.

Port Vale's reward for its win over Sunderland is a tie with Liam Rosenior's Chelsea, which is still in the hunt for a ninth FA Cup crown after edging a six-goal thriller with Wrexham, according to Reuters.

Australia grants asylum to 5 members of Iranian women’s soccer team, official says

Australia has granted asylum to five members of the Iranian women’s soccer team who were visiting the country for a tournament when the Iran war began, Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said on Tuesday (March 10, 2026), Associated Press reported.

The announcement followed days of urging by Iranian groups in Australia and by U.S. President Donald Trump for the Australian government to offer help to the women, who had not spoken publicly about a wish to claim asylum. The team drew widespread speculation and news coverage in Australia when players did not sing the Iranian anthem before their first match.

In the early hours of Tuesday local time, Australian federal police officers transported five of the women from their hotel in Gold Coast, Australia “to a safe location” after they made asylum requests. There, they met with Burke and the processing of their humanitarian visas was finalised, the minister told reporters in Brisbane hours later, according to Associated Press.
